That favourite time of the year is here! I’ve been thinking of all the reasons why I love the Fall season.
I was born on a late Fall night, so perhaps that has something to do with my love affair this this time of the year. When I was younger, I wasn’t too thrilled with this time of the year – it meant fewer hours outside, playing with friends. Cold mornings and the occasional cold or chill caught on days when you left home thinking there wouldn’t be a biting wind.
Now, I revel in this season for many reasons.
- Crisper air with less pollution and allergens.
- The scent of decaying vegetation is the promise of future growth.
- The swishy sound of leaves as you walk over them.
- Ideal conditions for colourful photography if you head into wooded trails.
I asked several of my blogger friends what they like about the Fall season. There were some fantastic answers that I enthusiastically agreed with and found to be true.

Fall is bittersweet for me, as a Greek girl nothing is more wonderful than the Summer.
But if I had to give you a list of what makes fall rock, here goes…
Warm coffee! Put away the Frappuccinos, the Frappes and bring on the hot chocolate, the peppermint infused lattes. Nothing better than sitting on the porch with a cool breeze and enjoying a warm coffee.
Clothing… Little booties, cashmere sweaters, sexy leather jackets… I can go on.
Experiences with the kids, the farm visits, pumpkin picking, leaf kicking, cute little layered children, planning for Halloween, decorating the house in fall decor, seeing it all through their eyes.
I live in the best downtown core in the world, all I have to do is drive up the Don Valley Parkway to see the best fall colours ever.
Still not my favorite season, but all these are good reasons to love it while it’s here.

My top 3 reasons to love fall..
Cooler conditions for walking with my English Bulldog! He loves it!
Getting to layer! I love scarves, sweaters, jackets & boots!!! So much more fun.
Leaves changing colour is nice but HALLOWEEN is nicer.

My three favourite Fall moments:
The smell of wood smoke. Nothing says Autumn like the cool crisp air being cut by the crackle of a lit fireplace or wood stove.
The forest. The colours of Fall go beyond the more obvious palette of bright yellows, oranges and reds…. If you look close enough.
Paddling (obviously!). I have many reasons why I love to paddle in the Fall. You can see 5 of them listed on Portageur.ca. Link: http://blog.portageur.ca/paddlingtheweb/5-reasons-paddling-is-better-in-the-fall-than-the-summer

The Food. The transition from hot to cooler nights always makes me want to curl up with a nice warm bowl of pho or home made hot pot. There’s is nothing more enjoyable than having a hot pot potluck. Someone simmers a nice warm broth, and everyone is responsible for bringing a topping to cook in the broth. It’s a great way to socialize and stay warm.
The Clothes. I am not one for short shorts or mini skirts, so the fall season is the perfect season for me. I love the layering, the autumn colours – I am just overall more fantastic in the fall. I get to bring out my comfy grandpa sweaters, my cardigans and my ginormous collection of scarves get to come out and play as well! I’m also not sweating like a hairy ape – nobody enjoys that!
This is going to be a common one but – the colour changing of the leaves. I spent three years on top of a mountain aka where Christmas Trees come from. So for three years it went straight from summer to winter. One day there was green grass and the next it was 10 inches of snow. I never got to see the leaves change colour, there was no fields of yellow and orange to admire. Just green and then BAM! overnight there was snow. So every year off the mountain I’ve learned to appreciate the trees turning colour, it reminds me to slow down and enjoy the transition of seasons … before winter gets here and I’m in full hibernation mode!

No Bugs: So great to be out in the backcountry without the Spring and Summer scratching and blood-loss.
Solitude: As much as I encourage others to get outside, it’s a nice treat to be out there when you can have it a little more to yourself. It’s an especially good time to visit some normally popular places.
The Colours: Whether you’re taking pictures or just watching the sunset, the bright leaves really accent the view so nicely.

Routine – I’m always a bit sad about the end of summer when Labour Day rolls around and it’s time for back-to-school but by the time fall has arrived we have happily settled into a comfortable routine of school and activities.
Changing colours and falling leaves – I don’t think that there’s anything more beautiful than the fall colours in Ontario and raking and playing in the falling leaves can’t be beat for simple, old-fashioned fun.
Trips to the pumpkin patch – Having children means an annual trip to the pumpkin patch to find the perfect specimens to set out at the front door and later carve into jack-o-lanterns. It’s one of the things that I’ll miss most when both of my kids are too grown up to be interested in pumpkin picking.
Family Celebrations – My older daughter was born on October 9th so fall is a time for family celebrations with her birthday and Thanksgiving (which I happen to think is the perfect holiday – no gifts to buy, just time spent with family and giving thanks for everything we have).
